"The good life is one inspired by love and guided by knowledge."

I have been teaching English Language and Literature for over twenty years. I have taught Secondary school students and undergraduates at University, working in a variety of locations including Cambridge, Wolverhampton and Edinburgh.
My qualifications include a Bachelor of Education (Hons) in English and Drama, and a Master of Arts in English Literature. In my last post, I was Head of English and Drama for several years where I had the privilege to produce and direct six stage productions. I was also awarded three Gold awards from the Good Schools Guide for my results in IGCSE English Language and Literature.
I have worked with adults and undergraduates who have intermediate English as a second language. They were able to write essays and use punctuation effectively in a short space of time as well as improve the fluency of their spoken English.
Treating everyone as the unique individual they are motivates and energises my interactions with students, regardless of their age. Everyone's ideas and opinions should be valued. I ignore labels and tap into the creativity inherent in all my students. Whether someone is an introvert, extrovert, high functioning, socially anxious, dyslexic, creative, academic, apathetic or anything in between, I often discover a gifted writer within. I encourage my students to be themselves, valuing their contributions and developing style of writing. In small groups or individually, students can express themselves and develop their critical thinking. Success follows on from feeling confident when your work is respected and valued. A student who is confident will invariably achieve higher exam grades.
I have witnessed how confidence in language creates a positive, ripple effect throughout every aspect of a student's studies. It is imperative to build up ideas and vocabulary steadily. Feeling calm and confident before an exam, knowing that you have several ideas and techniques in mind will result in higher grades.
I am an AQA examiner, however, I believe school is not just about passing exams. Often there is not enough time in some schools to analyse and celebrate the importance of Literature. Studying should be about enrichment, discovering the world around us as well as appreciating the English language and its uses. Excellent results are often achieved by default. I have established my own English School because of the experiences related to me by parents and the progress my students have made.
I can support students whose technical skills need enhancing especially with comprehension. I can give time to bring out the creativity and build vocabulary. I can encourage a love and appreciation of literature. This is what I enjoy doing. I can assess an individual's needs promptly and give appropriate feedback to support and encourage progress.
Whatever your requirements in English are, I am sure I can help. I look forward to hearing from you.
